Digital publishing in the age of AI: Italiaonline records a 10 per cent increase in traffic across its verticals in the first half of 2026

At a time when the global digital publishing industry is grappling with the impact of generative Artificial Intelligence on online searches – and the resulting widespread decline in search traffic volumes – Italiaonline is demonstrating in practice the extraordinary resilience of its publishing ecosystem and its associated advertising offering.

Traffic figures for the first half of 2026 show an average year-on-year (YoY) increase of +10% across the group’s verticals (SiViaggia, QuiFinanza and DiLei), a trend that continues with session peaks reaching +28.5% in January and May. This trend is also confirmed by an analysis of the home pages of the long-established portals Libero and Virgilio, whose direct traffic remains central to Italians’ information-seeking habits.

The comparison analyses and contrasts content consumption during the pre-AI Overviews period with the phase following the widespread introduction of AI-generated responses in search engines. This represents, therefore, a growth of fundamental strategic importance, particularly for a group that invests in the quality of content and advertising solutions created by its own staff.

Further strengthening the resilience of the Italiaonline ecosystem are the more than 10 million active accounts on Libero and Virgilio email services, which this year have undergone a complete overhaul of the user experience with a more modern and functional interface.

Putting the human factor at the heart of things: quality pays off
In the new media landscape dominated by concise, automated content, Italiaonline’s websites have been recognised by users and search engines for a clear commitment: investing in people, in the quality of their writing and in the authority of specialised journalism.

The algorithm rewards real-world experience, transparency of sources and the depth of human analysis. Italiaonline’s approach responds precisely to this need, offering thematic verticals capable of establishing themselves as credible points of reference in the sectors of personal finance, travel, motoring and women’s trends, with a now well-established strategic development that targets not only decision-makers but also younger generations.

Gen Z: the expansion of the ‘DiLei Girlz’, ‘QuiFinanza Green’ and ‘Virgilio Scuola’ brands
This growth is also supported by the ability to engage an increasingly young audience, attuned to the values of sustainability, inclusivity and new forms of entrepreneurship, which Italiaonline targets primarily through three of its magazines:

DiLei Girlz: a native extension of the DiLei brand, created to speak directly to Gen Z. With a fresh, visual and social-media-oriented style, it tackles topics related to youth empowerment, pop culture, relationships and new trends, creating a highly engaged community.

QuiFinanza Green: the offshoot of QuiFinanza focusing on the green transition, the circular economy and future careers linked to ESG criteria. A channel that meets the demand for clear, responsible economic information that resonates with the concerns of the younger generations.
Virgilio Scuola: Italiaonline’s educational hub within Virgilio Sapere: a free portal offering educational content designed for pupils, parents and teachers, from nursery school to sixth form, with resources also available for university guidance.
The role of iOL Advertising
Italiaonline’s ability to nurture relationships with users and create high-quality content for every target audience, combined with its wealth of first-party data – supplied primarily by over 10 million active email accounts – enables its in-house advertising agency, iOL Advertising, to develop and offer an increasingly innovative advertising portfolio that meets the needs of both the market and clients. To meet advertisers’ business and communication objectives, iOL Advertising constantly updates its offering with advanced solutions capable of engaging consumers at every stage of the purchasing journey. This cross-platform offering translates into genuine strategic consultancy, supporting companies in defining the most effective online marketing and communication strategies.

“Artificial intelligence is changing the way people search for information, but not their need for reliable sources. The growth of our verticals demonstrates that editorial quality and user trust remain a decisive asset, both for readers and for the companies that choose us, knowing they can plan advertising in high-value contexts,” comments Umberto Poschi, Chief Media & Tech Officer at Italiaonline. “ “AI is essential to many of our solutions, and at the same time it spurs us on to do what we do best even better: providing expert information and building lasting relationships with our audience. We will continue to invest in quality content, new target audiences such as Gen Z, and increasingly sophisticated advertising solutions, to offer users and advertisers a trustworthy and secure digital ecosystem.”
